Holiday Home Styling on the Mornington Peninsula: Coastal Without the Cliché

The Mornington Peninsula is our home base, and we never tire of it. From Sorrento and Blairgowrie to Safety Beach, holiday homes here have something special: salt air, big skies and guests who arrive ready to switch off. But with so many beautiful stays to choose from, "beachy" isn't enough to stand out any more. Here's how we approach styling a Peninsula holiday home so it feels fresh, works hard for guests and shines in your listing photos.

We are at home on the Mornington Peninsula

Start with the feeling, not the furniture

Before you buy a single cushion, decide how you want guests to feel the moment they walk in. Relaxed and barefoot? Cosy by the fire? Grown-up and a little bit luxe for a couples' weekend? Every choice that follows, from colours and textures to layout, should support that feeling.

When we restyled a Sorrento beach house that had been the family's holiday home for over 40 years, the brief was to keep the home's character while adding modern touches. The result? From the moment you step inside, you feel relaxed, like you're already at the beach. That's the feeling that turns a first stay into a repeat booking.

Go coastal, but skip the cliché

Anchors, "Beach This Way" signs and wall-to-wall navy stripes can make your home look like every other listing in the search results. Instead, let the setting do the talking:

  • Natural textures: linen, rattan, timber, stone and woven baskets.

  • A soft palette drawn from the landscape: sand, driftwood, sage and sea-glass blues.

  • Fewer, better pieces: one or two considered artworks rather than lots of small decorations.

  • Easy-care greenery that copes with coastal conditions and the occasional missed watering.

Coastal doesn't have to mean one look, either. One of our Safety Beach clients has a Balinese-inspired home, and our job was to capture that feel naturally rather than force a seaside theme on it. The best holiday homes feel true to the house and the place.

Style for every season, not just summer

Summer is busy on the Peninsula, but guests come all year round for winery weekends, long lunches and cosy winter escapes. Style for that. Keep a layer of throws and warmer bedding to swap in for the cooler months, make the fireplace or heater corner feel inviting, and give guests somewhere lovely to sit outside when the weather plays nice. A home that feels as good in July as it does in January gives you more to show in your photos and more reasons for guests to book outside peak season.

Make it work for real guests

Beautiful is only half the job. The practical touches are what earn the glowing reviews:

  • Sandy feet and wet towels: hooks by the door, a basket for beach gear, and somewhere to rinse off if you can.

  • Enough seating for the number of guests you sleep, at the dining table and in the lounge.

  • Bedside lighting and power points on both sides of the bed, plus somewhere to put a phone.

  • Durable, washable fabrics that still look and feel lovely.

Sharon owns six holiday homes and Dee has hosted in Australia and internationally, so we style with the guest's whole stay in mind, not just the first impression.

Style with the camera in mind

Your listing photos are your shop window. A room that feels wonderful in person can look flat online. Before your shoot, clear the benchtops, layer textures on the beds, open the curtains to make the most of natural light, and give each room one clear focal point: the view, the fireplace or the outdoor deck. If you'd rather hand it over, our Styling for Photography service covers everything from the pre-shoot consult to styling every room on shoot day.

Start with what you already have

You don't always need to start again. Often the biggest change comes from editing and rearranging what's already there. One Blairgowrie owner told us she loved the way we used what she had, just placed differently. Start by removing anything tired or tokenistic, then regroup the pieces you love into fewer, stronger moments around the home.
